Gazette du Bon Ton Information

History

"Gazette du Bon Ton"

As a publication, the pages were loose and not bound and enclosed within a cover or wrapper (see left picture). The articles concerned entertainment with emphasis on travel, theater, restaurants and or haute coutre fashion,

The Gazette attracted many of the leading artists of the period to design plates for the publication featuring the latest fashions sometimes in a whimsical or fanciful setting. The latest creations were displayed from the top Paris fashion houses - Lanvin, Worth, Paquin, and Poiret. Illustrations in the Gazette appeared both in the text and as separate plates or planches. The planches were done by hand in the pochoir stencil process and were highly coveted as decorative prints.

The Gazette maintained an image of the carefree style of the era. It is estimated that about 2,000 issues were published each year. Complete sets are very rare and individual prints enjoy a strong response from decorators and collectors.

"The Planches or Plates"

We have both the planches, croquis and various advertisements from all the seven years that the Gazette du Bon Ton was in publication. There are over 1000 prints illustrated.

The celebrated artists were also known in other areas of the art world as painters, illustrators, poster designers, fashion and costume illustrators and included George Barbier, George Lepape, Raoul Dufy, Thayht, A.E. Marty, Pierre Brissaud and others.

Prints from the Gazette are often reproduced in catalogs, calendars and advertisements to symbolize the art deco period.

"The Illustrated Stories"

"The Gazette du Bon Ton was very famous for its illustrates stories. Most stories were four to six pages and covered the lifestyle of the "rich and famous" of the period.

Each story was illustrated with small pochoir illustrations by the leading artists, who also designed the plates of the Gazette.

We have been able to accumulate these early stories and arrange each article in a decorative custom mat for display Each print is a desirable decorative and collectible print from the original series.
