Je Suis Julia Ramos

Get to know Argentinian designer

**Occupation: I own Blackmamba, a clothing brand in Argentina with my partner and designer Bianca Siconolfi. I'm in charge of the financial and administrative area. As well, I studied professional photography. I've always done artistic photography, but now I started doing it for Blackmamba too. So I'm currently exploring fashion photography, while also continuing my artistic series.

Instagram: @juliaaaramos @beblackmamba

Webpage: www.juliaramosphoto.com // www.beblackmamba.com**

Where were you born? I was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and have always lived and worked here. I'm 26 years old. After graduating as a photographer, in 2012 I opened a photography exclusive gallery (Holbox Photo Gallery). Blackmamba opened the same year. I continued the gallery until 2014, it turned out I didn't have enough time to properly take care of two businesses. So I decided to dedicate my entire working time to Blackmamba, which was growing at a fast pace and needed more of my time. I chose to pursue photography as a hobby and a personal passion, instead of as a job.

In one sentence what is unique about your work? It reflects entirely what I am as a person and what I love about being alive.

Why do you do what you do? I realized I have a creative side that needs to be taken care of. I can't shut it out. It’s too strong to be ignored. I've approached this side in different ways since I was very young. I've painted, drawn, tried to sing, tried to play guitar... and eventually explored photography and realized that its the one art form that makes me happiest. There are periods of time where I work too much and don't have enough time for myself and don't do anything photography-related. It turns out those periods are the unhappiest ones and when eventually I'm able to explore a new photo project, or continue an old one, I feel sane again.

What inspires you? Music, skiing, traveling, eating, reading.

Describe your personal style I'm a big metal and rock&roll fan, and my personal style has been influenced by that since I started listening to that music when I was 13 years old. So, I wear lots of black, I'm pale, and love metal t-shirts, leather and silver jewelry. Since I started with Blackmamba, my style has been heavily influenced by the collections Bianca creates. Everyday I wear at least one Blackmamba item. I seriously like the clothes we make. Also I wear lots of Rick Owens and Alexander Wang.

Your ultimate must-have: Rings, lots of silver rings.

What superpower would you have and why? Supersonic memory. I like to know things and treasure knowledge.

What is next for you? Blackmamba is growing steadily and strongly. Later this year we will open a store in a shopping mall for the first time. Also we recently launched our online shop. I want the brand to be international. As for photography, I decided I'm not interested in selling my work, being in a gallery, or anything that has to do with the commercial side of it. If someone wants to buy it, great, but I'm not after that. It simply makes me happy and wish to continue doing it all my life. I've been working on the same series for years now and try to continue improving them, while also exploring new subjects.

Je Suis Ara Vartanian

Occupation: Jewelry Designer
Instagram: @aravartanian

Where were you born?
I was born in Beirut and grew up in
Brazil. I've lived in Switzerland and
I've worked in the financial markets in the US. In 2000 I returned to São Paulo and to the jewellery market working as
a stone trader for the my family's business. Later in 2004 was when I started my own business creating and producing jewellery for my own brand.

Where do you live now?
I live in Sao Paulo but I'm going very often to London where I'm opening my first store in Europe.

In one sentence what is unique about
your work?

I believe that the uniqueness of my work is related to the base of my creative process which is all about developing a connection to the gem and respecting it through the design of the structure.

Why do you do what you do?
Growing up with my family business background, my revelation as creator came from the observation of the stones. For my family connection with the high
jewelry I was encouraged in my relationship with the rough material and started to feeling the stone in a different way. I understood that there is an intrinsic value across the surface of the diamond, for example, and that's when I started to reverse the diamond, today being the inverted diamond a hallmark of my creations. To feel that my inspirations were not related to conventional practices, I realized it was time to have my own brand and encourage this creative process that came so spontaneously from
me.

What inspires you?
My creative process does not follow any specific fashion trend, it’s all about the stone and respecting it through the design of the structure. I need to have this relationship for me to give my best. My connection to the piece of jewellery is so strong that I often feel a void when it is sold. Knowing that I will never see the piece again is actually hard for me. I like to think that they have aggregated love and design. First it's the relationship with the stone, finding it and the challenge of actually acquiring it, then because of my involvement with the stones, I need to give them the best and most worldly design each deserves and once the piece is finished and sold, it’s simply gone. The biggest drive of designing jewelry to me is the curiosity of the final result....I never really know how its going to end up.

Describe your personal style.
I define my style as a free style. However I'm probably influence by allot of the vintage objects I collect, such as old cars, old motorcycles, old furniture and lamps...hmm what else… valve equipped stereo equipment from the 50s that I like to listen to.

Your ultimate must-have.
I recently found and acquired a ultra rare rounded Ethiopian Opals. I've designed an earring with them combined with inverted fancy grey diamonds and white diamonds set on Hook Earrings. It was a huge challenge to design this piece. I have no words to describe how beautiful it is swinging from side to side with the different hues of colors. One lucky lady will have it soon... Wish I could keep this one.

What is next for you?
I'm very excited with the opening of my new store in London. London provokes reinterpretation and creativity. The main drive behind my work is originality and audacity; this city sharpens my creativity.

I was born in Donetsk, the city in the east of Ukraine which is in war now. My parents are still there. I left Donetsk before it became a hot spot on the world’s map. I often think about places where my early years passed but at the same time I’m very cosmopolitan and forward looking. Of course, to achieve something you have not only to possess a talent but to work hard on what you have, strive for dreams you want to realize.

Je Suis Melanie Viallon

Co-Founder and Creative Director for Les Lunes

Melanie Viallon
Occupation: Co-Founder and Creative Director of Les Lunes
Instagram: @leslunes

Where were you born?
I was born in the south of France, in the historic city of Albi. Built from red brick with a touch of wood, each street resonates with the artistry and strength of the world changers that came before me. Ancestors, such as late 19th century Toulouse-Lautrec, the famous painter who was immersed in the colourful and theatrical life of Paris, or the Comte de Laperouse who was a French naval officer and explorer whose expedition vanished in Oceania. I grew up surrounded by this strong energy of building beauty and discovering the world.

Why do you do what you do?
When I cannot find what I want, I create it. But I know exactly what I want, so creating for myself isn’t a big challenge. Creating for others is more interesting. When I was little I learned how to use tools to create, and my favorite was a sewing machine. I was 5 years old when I pushed the pedal of one for the first time. I moved to Paris at 18, and discovered the fashion world. It wasn’t what I expected. Fashion designers forget that between a garments draw on a piece of white paper, and a magazine advertising on glossy paper, there is an alive body wearing the clothes. I kept looking for it, a brand that would remember that the first priority of clothes is to be worn, not sold. I didn’t find it, so this is the focus of the product development at Les Lunes.

What is unique about your work?
The more I have constraints, the better my creativity is. This is why my first direction was in designing lingerie. Playing on the fine line that balances sexy, feminine and versatility while never falling to vulgarity. You have to respect constraints of the body, sizing, fabrics and shapes that expect a high-end lingerie product. It is such a challenge, I love it! Check out our George V line, the nightdress is the perfect example of this accomplishment.
Creating lingerie isn’t the only challenge. Bamboo as a raw material is a very complicated fabric to work with. It’s like the fabric is alive. But it’s the best fabric that you can find on the market, environmentally speaking as well as for the skin that is wearing it. The softness and properties cannot be compared to anything.
Designing a full wardrobe, from active wear to ready-to-wear using exclusively this jersey is a huge creative challenge. Add to it that we want each piece to perfectly fit every body shape in the world. Here is a very interesting challenge. And we are rocking it, following a unique artistic direction of geometric lines balancing the curves of the body, in an elegant style that is equal in comfort to the wearer.

What inspires you?
My customers. Who else? I spend as much time as I can with them in the store, studying their body shape, and their lifestyle. I imagine what they could wear to feel and look better in their clothes. I imagine the shapes, the colors, and the details that will elevate their natural beauty. I create what will reveal their personality with perfect functionality. I challenge all the constraints. And the garment becomes an extension of their personality supporting their lifestyle. Bamboo acts like a chameleon, it fits the body, the mind, and the mood of the wearer.
It’s those kind of pieces in our wardrobe that the more we wear them, the more we love them. They are the ones that we choose on the morning of an important busy day. A day that we need to have the upper hand with every opportunity to succeed.

Personal style:
Everyday starts with good lingerie. It’s the lining of how you look, and the bridge to who you are on the inside. I choose my Les Lunes George V Tanga or Thong depending on my mood, with always the George V Camisole to match them.
For week days, I will add our ruched pencil skirt. A pencil skirt, in jersey. How cool it is to have this strong feminine look of a woman banker and be able to run from meeting to meeting, and still enjoy lunch without feeling 2 sizes larger and be in pain from a non stretch waist.I wear it with the Gambetta Top, the lace balances the strictness of the bottom. And then, depending on the day, I play with colors. Navy blue and white when I miss France, Chocolate and Wine for gourmet days in a playful mood, black and emerald when I need to be confident and strong.

Ultimate must-have:
My knitted shawl. As a scarf, it dresses up a look. But in 2 seconds I can fall it around my shoulders, and have it wrap me like a cardigan.

What superpower would you have and why?
The ability to time travel. It would allow me to speak with my customers and design the piece in my mind. Then I would travel directly to Paris where I could work with our pattern makers to develop the styles. Then a hop to Shanghai to work out all the details at the facility, and adjust the patterns. I always adjust each line by hand and I like to sew the first sample. This way I can see what difficulties the workers will have and work with them to secure each step. And then I travel back in time to test the piece the second that I started to design it in my mind on the body that inspired it.

What is next for you?
Have more customer meetings. Fit more bodies shapes with LL mood.

I design because for me its an expression. My work defines me as a person. I realize aesthetic says a lot about an individual. For me its a constant process that can't stop. Je Suis Olga Kholodenko

index.jpg
 Olga Kholodenko
Occupation: founder and designer for OKOhandbags
Instagram: @okohandbags
Where were you born?
I was born in Kiev, the Ukraine.

Why do you do what you do?
As a little girl I was never pleased with plane outfits
of my dolls; so, I was always trying to spruce them up with
small pieces of scrap fabrics, ribbons, buttons and other
trims.
Ever since then I love to create fashion items that stand out
in a crowd and show individuality of its owner.

What is unique about your work?
At one point of my life I came to a conclusion that
I have a greater passion for accessories than clothing.
To me, accessories (bags and jewelry) have greater
impact on an outfit than any other fashion item.
Accessories can easily create a new story for an old dress.
So, when I work on a new design, I simultaneously start
creating a story that could bring that particular design to
life. A job of a new owner of that bag or piece of jewelry is
to write their own grand finale to the story and make that item
unique in their own way. Also, all my accessories are made from
leather remnant that otherwise would be put in landfills.

What inspires you?
Life on its own is a great inspiration.
Yet, there are certain events and people that
caused the greatest impact on my life. Names of my designs
speak for themselves. For example: Zhanna clutch was made for
my mom; every detail of that design could keenly describe her
personality-black color, leather shell and satin lining
describe her classic taste in fashion; straight lines of the
design convey strength of her inner self; fluidity and
shine of the trim material show her soft side that I've known
as her child.

Personal style:
In general, I prefer simple
silhouettes with unique details.
I favor proportionally correct and balanced outfits.
I have my "all black" and "burst of color" days.
I'm not a fan of white color, chunky heels, or bows.

Ultimate must-have:
comfortable stylish shoes of any heel
height.

What superpower would you have and why?
Fun question that got me thinking :) Super speed.
I'd like to be able to move quickly from place to place.
Never late! Avoid traffic! Don't have to buy tickets!
Can spend more time at your destination!
When someone needs you, you can be there right away!
And, yes, more time to design!

What is next for you?
This year, besides working on new designs,
I'm planning to participate in more fashion and sale events
to gain greater exposure and more raving clients.
