Riccardo Tisci shows Burberry costumes for Marina Abramović's opera “The 7 Deaths of Maria Callas”

7 Deaths of Maria Callas

Riccardo Tisci has shared on Instagram a photo of the costumes created by Burberry for the new opera by Marina Abramovich “7 Deaths of Maria Callas”.

“I am honored to be working with you on this amazing project. I am very proud of you and the fact that you remain a pioneer in this world, ”the designer wrote in a post.

The production consists of 7 legendary Callas arias, each accompanied by a short film starring Abramovic and Hollywood actor Willem Dafoe. It is dedicated to the theme of the finale of the life of the opera diva. After the death of her lover, Aristotle Onassis, in 1975, she locked herself in her apartment and two years later died of cardiac arrest, at the age of 53.

Screen Shot 2020-08-11 at 9.44.42 PM.png

Abramovich plays Callas, and the identities of the artist and the singer merge, so it is not always clear who it is about. Defoe plays the main character's lover and killer.

The videos were recorded in Los Angeles in November 2019. The music for the opera was written by the Serbian composer Marko Nikodievich. The premiere was supposed to take place on April 11 at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, but due to the pandemic it was postponed to September 1.

Anthony Vaccarello, creative director of Saint Laurent, acquired the vintage YSL collection from designer Olivier Chatenet. The collection consists of four thousand items created from 1966 to 1985. The amount of the deal was not disclosed.

The collection consists mainly of Saint Laurent Rive Gauche ready-to-wear garments, including coats, dresses, suits, blouses, knitwear, bags, shoes, jewelry, scarves and some haute couture outfits. The collection includes a 1967 African-style beaded gown previously owned by the Duchess of Windsor. The items will be housed in the existing Saint Laurent archive located at the brand's headquarters in Paris.

“I love that my collection will live its life and be useful. I have had a lot of fun over the past 30 years, putting it together and showing it at exhibitions in Paris, Hong Kong and Shanghai. I still love it, even if it is more to me does not belong, "commented Olivier Chatenet. The designer noted that he absolutely trusts the house of Saint Laurent and Anthony Vaccarello: "They have complete freedom to save and use the collection as they please."

Armani says fashion marketing "raping" women

MILAN, Feb 21 (Reuters) - Giorgio Armani accused the fashion industry on Friday of “raping” women with short-lived trends and sex-driven marketing.

“I think it’s time for me to say what I think. Women keep getting raped by designers,” Armani, 85, told reporters on the sidelines of a show for his Emporio Armani line at Milan Fashion Week.

“If a lady walks on the street and sees an ad with a woman with her boobs and arse in plain sight and she wants to be like that too, that’s a way of raping her,” Armani said. “You can rape a woman in many ways, either by throwing her in the basement or by suggesting that she dresses in a certain way.”

Armani, known for his sober, elegant outfits, founded his label in 1975 and has built it into a global brand.

“In my show, there are short skirts, long skirts, ample and tight trousers. I have given maximum freedom to women who can use all possibilities if they are sensible,” he said.

“I’m sick of hearing the word ‘trend’. We need to try to work for today’s woman. There shouldn’t be trends,” he said.

He said his Emporio Armani show, his younger line, was inspired by “strong-willed” young women.

He will present the Fall/Winter 2020 collection for his main Giorgio Armani line on Sunday. (Reporting by Claudia Cristoferi ; Writing by James Mackenzie; Editing by Janet Lawrence)

Move over King Kong, it’s time for Rhinos

Behati Prinsloo Flips the Lights on the Empire State Building to Mark World Wildlife Day

Screen Shot 2020-03-04 at 9.20.52 PM.png

Behati Prinsloo, Namibian-born supermodel, joined forces with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to mark World Wildlife Day.

At the Empire State Building, an iconic feature on the New York skyline, made famous through movies like King Kongand Sleepless in Seattle, Prinsloo flipped the switch to light the building blue, green, and gold, reflecting colors of the oceans, earth and plains to highlight the plight of wildlife, including rare and endangered species, on World Wildlife Day (3 March).

Sharing her commitment to Namibia’s black rhinos, Prinsloo, the Global Ambassador for Save the Rhino Trust Namibia (SRT), also made it possible to have an image of a rhino circling the spire as part of the design.

“Growing up in Namibia where I was lucky enough to see elephants, lions and rhinos in the wild, I never imagined that their future would be so precarious that we’d need to set aside a day to remind ourselves of what we have to lose if they go extinct. Together we simply cannot let that happen,” said Prinsloo.

Simson Uri-Khob, CEO of SRT, stressed that the efforts to stop poaching and fight wildlife crime are an ongoing battle with local communities, regional partnership and international allies deeply involved in the fight.

SRT is part of the USAID-funded initiative, Combatting Wildlife Crime Project (CWCP).  Launched in 2017, the 5-year, 5-country CWCP aims to increase rhino numbers in Namibia; and reduce poaching of elephants and increase the opportunities for their range expansion in select areas of the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA).

“Working closely with our local partners, we have achieved 2 years without a rhino poaching incident in the northwest of Namibia, while, at the same time, helping to raise awareness of the importance of biodiversity to the planet and to the lives of local people,” said Uri-Khob.

“Thanks to Behati and the UNDP, today this message is shown clearly in the night sky of New York City.”

Chris Weaver, head of WWF Namibia, which coordinates the efforts of 13 CWCP partners, including WWF Namibia, Legal Assistance Centre, Integrated Nature Conservation and Rural Development, Namibia Association of CBNRM Support Organizations, Namibia Development Trust, Namibia Nature Foundation, and Save the Rhino Trust Namibia, said, “The scale of wildlife crime is  vast and sophisticated, requiring many donor-funded wildlife crime support initiatives to work in a collaborative manner to counter it, and all recognize that no single approach will end wildlife crime.

But, by raising awareness, building capacity, benefitting communities, stopping poaching, and strengthening investigations and prosecution, these initiatives and the CWCP are giving wildlife and communities a fighting chance.

Today’s event in New York City to mark World Wildlife Day is a fantastic example of the importance of sharing the message to stop poaching and end wildlife crime on a global scale.”

TBILISI TOP DESIGNER NAMES TO INVEST IN

In a highly competitive market, it has somehow become a requisite for capital cities to have their own fashion week like those in NY, Russia, Hong Kong and Berlin as a visual demonstration of wealth and taste. In the last three years, Tbilisi became a new hot-spot for buyers and opinion makers looking for authenticity, avant-gardism and exoticism. Georgian fashion scene has gone through an unprecedented development. How ? Just take a look at the talent .

ALEKSANDRE AKHALKATSISHVILI

Aleksandre Akhalkatsishvili is leading the vanguard of Tbilisi talents bringing fashion clout (and a global audience) to the city. He’s known for strict lines and conservative silhouettes, cooled-up with draping, strong colors, and a boyish spirit—and Spring delivers just that in his signature faux eco-leather. Find it in an array of suiting, with an edge—think: cropped blazers that tie at the waist, dramatic slits, and V-shaped waistlines—alongside his sophisticated draping, updated with asymmetry.
The buys: any of the faux leather trousers (they have the perfect slouch), and the side-tie wrap dress in burnt orange cupro (a silky fabric made from reclaimed cotton linter).

LADO BOKUCHAVA

A beacon of emerging talent, Tbilisi is home to some of the most exciting names in the industry—and chief among them is Lado Bokuchava. The Georgian (who’s also at the helm of Matériel, another coveted Tbilisi label) puts a fresh, effortlessly-cool spin on the classic going-out wardrobe with his directional eye. Here, find his signature irresistible color combinations and unexpected texture with scarf details (the blazer in powder blue and mint green is divine), ruching at the side seams, beautiful drapery, and detachable glove-sleeves on corseted maxis. The buys: the scarf bra—a fluttery, open-back halter—and the sand pink strapless dress with a detachable scarf.

MATÉRIEL

Dubbed “Georgia's most famous label”, Matériel is a destination for the cool tailoring and leather currently pouring out of the region. The label is currently helmed by two buzzy young talents, Aleksandre Akhalkatsishvili and Lado Bokuchava. Their combined aesthetic marries a restrained androgyny with a youthful flair for rich color and sensual ruching. We love the new cutout midi dresses—they’re versatile, standout, and chic.

MACH & MACH

With 141k followers, Mach & Mach, helmed by sister duo Nina and Gvantsa Macharashvili, is Tbilisi’s most famous Instagram brand—and with good reason: the label’s specialty includes sparkle and shine-heavy pieces ideal for parties and other such Insta-worthy occasions. The news for Spring? Reinventions of their bestsellers (see: blazer dresses and silks adorned with diamante details) alongside an introduction of faux leather and a standout '90s-style skinny strap column dress.

GEORGE KEBURIA

Tbilisi-based talent George Keburia has already won over the It set with his offbeat-cool aesthetic—much like the futuristic, wavy-shaped sunglasses that launched his career, his line of geometric, sharp-lined, playful ready-to-wear has earned approval from the A-list (spotted most recently on Kaia Gerber). Spring delivers a range of blazers that bear the traces of his now-signature '80s-cool quirk. We love the longer-line styles: pair with a matching skirt (complete with asymmetric hemlines or draped details), or try wearing it alone for a going-out look with a bit of edge.

Joliegazette Masterclass / Subject: Chanel 2.55 clutch

Did you know?!

The 2.55 got its famous name from the month and the year in which it was originally issued, which is February 1955. All the features of this iconic bag have their own little background story.

The burgundy lining represents the religious boarding school where Coco Chanel grew up. In fact the burgundy was the color of Coco Chanel’s uniform at the religious boarding school Coco attended.

The zipped compartment on the inside of the front flap was made to hide love letters.

The outside flap on the bag was used by Coco to store her spare change.

The strap chains were inspired by the key chains the nuns would wear at the convent where mademoiselle Chanel grew up.

Gabrielle Chanel decided to add straps to the bag to free the hands of high society ladies. These women would usually hold a clutch, which was both unpractical and tiring. As you can imagine, carrying a bag can be a difficult task while joggling Champagne flütes, theatre flyers and hors-d'oeuvres. To add shoulder strap was a revolutionary idea in the fifties.

Coco Chanel’s inspiration came by observing soldiers who’d carry cross-body bags. In February 1955 the iconic bag was born. Her clientele was initially quite skeptical about this new rebellious design, but the bag quickly became a fashion sensation. In its first year it became so popular that mademoiselle Chanel had to refuse orders.

Gabrielle Chanel added the quilted stitch pattern to add volume, structure and shape to the bag. The bag has a twist-lock on the front which is called the mademoiselle lock. ‘Coco’ wanted to create a new era for women by liberating and empowering them. A functional and practical fashion item was a completely new idea at the time and was in line with Gabrielle Chanel’s vision of women’s fashion.
